If You Miss ’90s Fashion, You’ll Love The New ‘VSCO Girls’ Trend

Our ’90s nostalgia isn’t over yet. From “normcore” to scrunchies to fanny packs, ’90s fashion has been on trend lately, and it’s only gaining popularity thanks to “VSCO girl” style.

VSCO fashion is likely familiar to many of you, even if the name doesn’t ring a bell. That’s because the name only originated recently, a nod to the VSCO photo editing app, used by many to create dynamic videos for their Tik Tok and YouTube channels.

But the fashion associated with the name is pure ’90s: puka shell necklaces, oversized sweatshirts, Fjällräven backpacks, Pura Vida bracelets, Birkenstocks (or Crocs!) and laid back skatewear like Vans. To get a feel for this mix of fashion choices, check out @vsco.girl00, an Instagram account dedicated to all things VSCO girl:

But don’t think that VSCO style is all about the skate ramp. There’s also a heavy emphasis on the preppy lifestyle, with Vogue itself mentioning that Princess Diana had been nominated as the “original VSCO girl.” The idea for the nomination originated from Twitter user @ejdickson, who put together a photo collage that proves Princess Di was light years ahead of her time when it came to her fashion choices:

The beauty of the “VSCO girl” trend is that it works for every body type and that literally anyone can pull off this aesthetic. Plus, it’s so perfect for layering as we move into cooler weather. A long ribbed tank top is easily paired with an extra-large sweatshirt on top of cozy bike shorts. A pair of flared bell bottoms perfectly complements a roomy sports-brand tee such as Umbro or HangTen for an easy autumn look.

The look is pure ’90s minimalism and approachability, as shown by Instagram user @xo.shru below:

Instagram user @grazielli__pereira, meanwhile, makes a case for how a simple white T-shirt and jeans can be on-trend and classic at the same time. VSCO girls unite!

Are you a VSCO girl? And, more importantly, who else is in the mood for TLC and a rewatch of “10 Things I Hate About You”?
