At least eight people have been killed in shootings in the German towns of Hanau and Kesselstadt, in the country’s west.
Local reports state that three people were shot at a shisha bar in the centre of town about 10pm local time.
The perpetrator then drove to nearby Kesselstadt before killing five at another shisha bar.
It is believed that no suspects are in custody, and it is not known whether there is more than one gunman.
There are reports that others have been wounded in the shootings.
There have been unconfirmed reports of another shooting in nearby Lamboy, and a heavy police contingent is at the scene.
The gunman or gunmen are still at large.
Shisha bars are shops and cafes where patrons smoke flavoured tobacco from water pipes, or hookahs.
The bars are popular in Germany with Turkish expatriates as well as the wider German community.
Hanau and Kesselstadt are neighbouring cities just outside of Frankfurt.
A heavy police presence is now in the region, with officers moving in from Bavaria to reinforce local officers.
Police have said that a man handcuffed near the Kesselstadt crime scene had no connection to the shooting.
More to come.
